Telecom Carriers Lose Broadband Share

Phone-service providers are losing ground in the battle for high-speed Internet customers. Cable companies including Cablevision lured Web users in the second quarter with discounts, faster download speeds and a direct assault on phone companies' home turf: voice calling. The number of new cable modem users gained by cable companies in the period was higher than the total of new digital subscriber line, or DSL, customers added by the phone companies. That's a reversal from the first quarter, when phone companies attracted the higher tally. Cable operators are expected to continue increasing their share of the 45 million broadband users in the U.S. By the end of 2005, the share for cable companies is likely to rise one point to 56%. That's still below the 60% share cable had in 2003.
